Suggested PartitionsForum: HD Install Topic: Suggested Partitions started by: DSL_Ninja Posted by DSL_Ninja on Feb. 06 2007,14:24
I only recently discovered DSL after I looked for a reasonably quick linux enviroment for a local web server. (the computer is a pentium 2, 400MHz, 128MB RAM, (16MB used for the videocard leaving 116 over for the operating system) with a 40GB hard drive. What I wanted to achieve was something like DSL, myDSL, lots of user space, some sort of development (C++, wxWidgets) environment, allowing me to learn a little about Linux programming and cross platform development (hence wxWidgets). I am a newbie as far as Linux is concerned, my experience being limited to having installed Slackware and Suse previously, and seeing the usability of the computer drop like a stone. With these previous installations, the setting up was more or less simply run setup and let it do it's stuff. Now with DSL, I am beginning to learn about Linux partitions, and just oh so much more. Now to the question. Does anyone have recommended partition information, something along the line of hda1 50M - DSL, hda2 - 256M-swap, hda3 - 5G - myDSL, hda4 the rest - user files? since I will be the only user, the rest of the space should be available to me as user and not limited (I think). Or should hda1 be 200M for a HDD install? Any suggestions. I want to investigate other options (such as replacing monkey with Apache or fnord, adding qmail perhaps, anjuta or some other ide for development - suggestions? etc. etc.) Obviously I don't really want to sacrifice any speed (since the computer seems so slow in the first case) and I would love to get my web site back up - nothing important, just information relating to wxDev-C++ and downloads relating to it, but I would like to get it back in the air. Also I need to access windows (cough cough) 98/XP/2000 shares so I will need to configure samba on it too. Anyway, enough waffle. To the point, has anyone suggestions for dividing the hard drive up sensibly? With a view to later expansion perhaps? Something cast in iron would be nice, but suggestions along the lines of myDSL partition 30% of remaining room, user space 50%, something else 10% something else 10% would be welcome too. well, we all probably have different ways of getting there. for me i went like this;hda1=55mb (frugal image) hda2=19gb (working drive) hda3=945mb (swap) seems to work real well on this system....400mhz celeron, 192mb ram..... thats my take, hope it helps..... torp |
