I was happily running DSL v3.2 on my box. Then came v3.3. An upgrade is in order, it is a good thing! Fortunately, I was prepared. I had done my homework and did a frugal install as I learned from the wiki. All I have to do now to upgrade a frugal install, replace my old KNOPPIX file with the new KNOPPIX file, according to the wiki. Here we go: Denied! File system is a Read only file. I tried chmod, but it will not let me. What is the trick? Audioice

The current KNOPPIX file must not be in use in order to overwrite it. You can either boot "toram" to load KNOPPIX into ram, or boot a live CD or any other Linux system.

The box is quite old and has only 64Mb of ram. So to RAM option will not work. My experience has been that the hard disk is not accessible when using a Live CD. My only option may be to reinstall everything? Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I don't have any problems accessing hard drive partitions when loading from a CD. Just boot and apt/tools/Frugal Install should do it.(note: Did you mount the partition?)

Depending on how you did your original frugal installation, i.e., how did you originally boot to perform the installation, both frugal install scripts have an upgrade option. So it is not really a re-install and no manual copying is required.

To access the Hard drive you must first mount the partition using the mounting tool bottom right of desktop, and then access it via /mnt/hda1 /mnt/hda2 /mnt/hda3 ... etcIf you know this then you're not making the mistake that I made.
..and, you might have to open Emelfm as super user (right click on desktop icon)

True. I usually list those changes with each release candidate and site news announcement.

Depending on how you did your original frugal installation, i.e., how did you originally boot to perform the installation...That was a from scratch installation, booted from floppy as PC did not support booting from CDROM. I did set my partitions manually following guidelines in wiki. After that, just selected Apps->Tools->Frugal Install.
I will give this a try again soon. Thanks for the info.

Well, you guys are the PROs! I booted with my v3.3 CD, used the mount tool to mount hda2, and proceeded with the frugal upgrade. Everything seems to have worked. Files were copied and the disruption was extremely painless. I did originally made a from scratch frugal installation, i.e. relieved the hard disk of that other OS, DLS being the only OS on this HD now. I booted with the help of a floppy, as the old thing will not boot from CD-ROM. I manually partitioned the hard disk as per wiki instructions, and then performed the frugal install using GRUB.
