I realize that I need to understand the critical configuration files better and that understanding the configurations would answer many of my questions.

I believe that /cdrom/boot/grub/menu.lst and /ramdisk/home/dsl/.filetool.lst are the critical files.  (I call them "critical" because these are the ones you're supposed to make changes to for persistent home, adding users, etc.)

I'd like to see what all of you have done.  Are there any other configuration files you've had to modify?  Please post the contents of your menu.lst and /ramdisk/home/dsl/.filetool.lst .

Here are my configurations:

/cdrom/boot/grub/menu.lst (just the critical portion):
title DSL
kernel /boot/linux24 root=/dev/hda1 quiet vga=normal noacpi noapm nodma noscsi frugal home=hda3 opt=hda3 restore=hda3 root=hda3
initrd /boot/minirt24.gz

/ramdisk/home/dsl/.filetool.lst
opt/ppp
opt/bootlocal.sh
opt/powerdown.sh
opt/.dslrc
opt/.mydsl_dir
home/dsl/
home/jhsu/
/etc/password
/etc/shadow
