Monitor IssuesForum: HD Install Topic: Monitor Issues started by: TruthElixirX Posted by TruthElixirX on Sep. 17 2007,03:50
Everythign is working wonderfully for me (Even my wireless card wiht zero effort. ) except I'm stuck in 800 x 600 resolution. I know htis monitor and this hardware is capable of more. Any suggestions on how to get it up to 1024 x 768.I'm a linux newbie (THis is my first time using any linux distro) so I won't know much what you guys are talking about. I did search to try to find an answer to my problem, but got zilch in results. Also, if someone could link me to some places on how to upgrade firefox, install pidgin, and some sort of media player that'd be great. Thanks in advance! 1. To change resolution: run xsetup (and restart X if necessary)2. Use mydsl. Not sure if pidgin is in there, but you could always use gaim. mplayer and xine, amongst others, are popular media players (I'm assuming you mean audio/video players) Posted by TruthElixirX on Sep. 17 2007,14:29
I tried running X Setup, but it doesn't change anything. It just keeps me at the same resolution. BTW, Pidgin is GAIM. They renamed it. Or at least I think... Posted by curaga on Sep. 17 2007,15:16
Yeah, Gaim is now Pidgin. Do you have a normal hd-install? Then you can just edit the file /home/dsl/.xserverrc

Yes, you must restart X after (or boot with the cheatcode "xsetup").To restart X: - exit your window manager, or press ctrl+alt+backspace. - start up X with `startx` Yes, GAIM was renamed to Pidgin after a naming dispute from AOL. I was just pointing out you could get it, but that it would be an older release (which may be better for now anyways). Posted by curaga on Sep. 17 2007,17:48

Thanks for the help. I tried as suggested and the resolution changes appropriately, but the colors are all distorted. I tried several different color settings as well. Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on Sep. 18 2007,05:20
- try the other xserver in xsetup (maybe you will need to set your video during boot, see cheatcodes)- make sure you have set enough memory for your video in your BIOS, if applicable Posted by TruthElixirX on Sep. 19 2007,00:41
I tried the other kind of xserver in xsetup and got some sort of message about "No response from X. 0 executions in 0 seconds" or something like that and I had to manually rerun Xsetup from the command line. Where can I find these "cheatcodes"? How do you have a link to setting up the RAM in the bios? Posted by ^thehatsrule^ on Sep. 19 2007,01:39
1. See the wiki (or press F2/F3 on livecd prompt)2. See your motherboard (or laptop) manual, if applicable. Posted by andrewb on Sep. 19 2007,03:23
