Ok, here's what I want to do. I'm making myself a nice home router. It's a 500 MHz K6-2 with 128 mb of ram and a very noisy 1 gig hdd. I would like to somehow make dsl boot from hdd (it's already installed there), make a ramdisk, have dsl copy itself there and continue running from a ramdisk happily ever after :) (at which point the noisy hdd can be dismounted and its power turned off).

Any ideas about how this could be done?

(and don't anyone say compact flashes... they're damn hard to get here. usb is also not an option, my asus TX-97e motherboard can't boot from usb)

Do a frugal install, add "toram" to the boot codes. And you're running in ram :)

For a debian-type hd install, you would need to make something up yourself to do that..
