I have DSL 4.1 but don't understand how I run this as a live CD or  install it to my HDD.  Get the screen that says "run from CD or flash drive" click Enter, then nothing happens. Thanks.

Can you post a bit more info as to how you are trying to boot.  Basically the liveCD boots into the OS as if it's running as an installed OS and the hd install is just that.

Taking the live running version and setting it up to run local of your hard disk.

Back to the q though, what method are you trying to boot from, CD or flash and do you get the large DSL logo with a Pres <enter> to begin or F2 for boot options.
boot:

Now is that what you are getting?  If so, (sorry, I have to check) but is your keyboard working (try caps lock to toggle light).

Report back with that basic info to start....

Yes, I'm booting it from an ISO CD I burned and I get the big logo with a Pres <enter> to begin or F2 for boot options.
boot:. I'd like to just run it as a live CD first to see how it works. Then install it later. Thanks.

then nothing happens.
Please elaborate on this?

It looks like it's loading then I get a bunch of I/O error messages then nothing. I created an ext3 partition of 10gigs and a swap-file on the HDD. I'm assuming DSL doesn't have a partitioner like Puppy Linux so I have to prepare it before hand. I know there's not a hardware problem because this machine was running XP Pro just fine.

Sounds like a corrupt download, or just a corrupt cd copy.

I would agree, try a re-download / burn.  Also, DSL has multiple way's to partition the disk, you can always fdisk it, but if you run the livecd there is an install-hd option where it walks you through the whole thing, not as visually amazing as a fedora install, but it holds you hand through the steps including disc partitioning.

Maybe I expect too much by "it holds you hand"...

I've now got DSL 4.1 running as a Live-CD on my old laptop.
I did consider to make a HD install, but as I have understood, frugal installation is more recommended (for easier updates).

Anyway, in both cases the HD needs to be partitioned. Which I'd like to do to get rid of the old OS...
The HD install asks me to
"Enter the target partition. (EXAMPLE: hda2): "

Do I just pick a name? Why hda2?

How do I look at what capacity my HD has?

If you boot DSL with the install label it will present you with many tools for installing. At the first boot prompt:

boot: install

You can use cfdsik to look at the hard drive and re-partition it.
