oops on floppy bootForum: HD Install Topic: oops on floppy boot started by: ChristopherS Posted by ChristopherS on Sep. 08 2004,01:40
Hi I'm a linux newbie and this is my first time trying to install DSL on an older PC. Pentium 100 with 48MB ram and 1GB harddrive. The cd rom drive is an IMES ICD-1200AT VC8V, Firmware version A01.When booting floopy for install without CD rom drive installed the boot process cannot find files, OK. However when I reconnect the cd rom drive I get an OOPS, as follows
Obviously this has something to do with the cd rom drive but what I do not know. Anybody know whats going on and is the situation salvageble. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can give me Regards ChristopherS Posted by ChristopherS on Sep. 14 2004,00:07
Further to the above:After booting into "failsafe" option I get this code
Does this mean that the CD ROM drive is not supported or I have a faulty CD Rom, it has no problems running under windows. Regards ChristopherS Posted by cbagger01 on Sep. 14 2004,01:22
Try adding:pnpbios=off to your boot command line Posted by Petrohead on Sep. 14 2004,01:28
What cbagger01 said.........Also may want to look in the BIOS and set PnP OS to no, or what ever it takes to imply that, if that option is there. Posted by ChristopherS on Sep. 16 2004,01:11
Thanks to Petrohead & cbagger01 for your input:I have ADDED "pnpbios=off" to the DEFAULT linux24 APPEND line in the syslinux.cfg file on the floppy boot disk and in the computer BIOS I have disabled power management set
set
but still get the same error message when I boot from floppy. Any other ideas? Incidently I have managed to boot with no problems using the boot img from "Trustix 2.1". Posted by vipla on April 09 2006,09:26
I'm having an identical problem too. Tried setting pnp off and booting with failsafe mode but nothing helped. My laptop is an old AST Ascentia A-series with a Pentium 133MHz CPU and 32Mb or ram. The cd-drive is TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-2402B and it's the secondary master drive. So if someone knows hot to help it would be greatly appreciated :-)

I found a workaround for this error. In my case the error is caused by the cd-rom drive and using the command "hdc=noprobe" in the boot menu gets me to the system that is installed to the hd. Only thing that I still haven't figured out if I'm able to get the cd-rom drive to operate at all under DSL.For installation I had to use the command "pci=off" in the cd boot menu. I was able to get the live cd system running with cd support but at the same time I lost all pcmcia functionality etc so for me it was better to not to have the cd-rom working and the system installed on the hd. I hope this will be of any use to someone battling with a similar problem. |
