dsl dont load after hd installForum: HD Install Topic: dsl dont load after hd install started by: iscraigh2 Posted by iscraigh2 on Sep. 22 2004,14:11
I made a CD with the DSL's that I wanted in the root directory plus some in the optional directory. Then I did a HD install. Now when it boots from the hard drive it does not install the dsl's that used to be in the root directory. When I add hda1 they do not show up in the mydsl, I can find them in emelfm and install them that way but when I reboot they are gone.(icons stay just won't work) How do I have them installed at boot like the cd does? Some are UCI's if that makes a difference.Craig Posted by roberts on Sep. 22 2004,15:29
The dsl-hdinstall installs only the base system. The only choice is standard (busybox) or enhanced (gnu-utils). If your extensions are on the cd then using emelfm to load them should install them into the directories of the hard disk and therefore survive a reboot. If however your uci are on the cd, they will not. Why, because they are mounted and not installed. Uci are really best used when running from compressed versions of DSL. For hard drive, I would choose the dsl version. You can however use the uci, if your uci are on the hard drive, then to automatically mount them upon each bootup then add the appropriate mount command to your /opt/bootlocal.sh and then add the mydsl-load xxxx.uci command to your .xinitrc before the fluxbox line.

Okay because I am a newb lets see if I understand this.I have copied them to the root of hda1 this drive/partition is my main one that DSL is installed to therefore it is mounted upon bootup as read only. would I have to put a command in to remount it as rw? what would the syntax be? the next command would be mydsl-load firefox.uci Do i need to put the drive in or will it find it if hda1 is mounted? Sorry I am sure it seems obvious but i am finding my way slowly. Thanks Craig Posted by roberts on Sep. 23 2004,14:35
I guess before we can communicate we need to get some terminology correct. You said you did a hard drive install. Your second post you say it is read only. Not possible. You must have done a frugal, or a poormans, or a copy of knoppix folder, or a boot tohd? Which is it. Can't help you if you tell us one thing and it is not that. A hard drive install does not produce a read only filesystem. Only the other compresssed image installs do. Posted by iscraigh2 on Sep. 24 2004,02:59
I use the hard drive install from the menu as I am connected to the internet I chose the enhanced install. I notice in bootup that it says it mounts hda1 as r only I thought that was odd also. I have done this several times and the result is always the same. Can I put a command in the bootup file to remount as RW? Craig Posted by roberts on Sep. 24 2004,05:24
What is the output of the mount command? What is the output of fdisk -l command ? Posted by iscraigh2 on Sep. 24 2004,17:13
my newbishnes showingWhen I see the read only on bootub it is refering the the root partition only I seem to be able to write to the drive now no problem. Using the DSL's instead of the UCI's seems to work although I have not had any luck downloading flash. I dont seem to be able to connect to the server it just keeps retrying. Hopefully the server is just down! Thanks for your help. Craig |
