Swapped linux HD drive to laptopForum: HD Install Topic: Swapped linux HD drive to laptop started by: gatekeeper Posted by gatekeeper on Nov. 06 2004,14:37
After installing to HD and remiving it to laptop I get a damnsmall auto login and cannot start xinit. This is an old IBM thinkpad model 560 which does not come with a cd rom drive so that is why I had to use another system to set it up. I need to know what commands to use so that this will start the GUI. Thanks

I'm not sure if this will help, but you could run xsetup.sh from the command line to reset the X setup.

Yep I tried that and got it to display in black and white and then when I tried changing that I lost it again.

Ok I got it up and running however the screen displays about an inch smaller all around the outside edge indicating that the display driver is not 100% correct. I need to know how to edit the modes.

Run Xvesa -listmodes to see which resolutions and colour depths Xvesa supports on your laptop. If the max is 640x480, then you're out of luck and the only way to fix it is to install a full X server like XFree or X.org (search the forum to find out how). If it supports 800x600, then the setup is in one of the files in your home directory - I don't have DSl box around right now, but I think it is something like .xinitrc, .xinit ....EDIT: also see < http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....;t=2968 > |
