Persistent keyboard layout etcForum: HD Install Topic: Persistent keyboard layout etc started by: modon Posted by modon on Dec. 25 2004,18:44
Hello,I've just upgraded to version 0.9.1. Well, upgraded, kind of, I was quite satisfyed with my old 0.4.8 version. But I realized it was time to install a newer and more secure version. Excepts some hicks, some reinstallations (tryed to install while toram and with icewm installed and running, and it was quite funny trying but it didn't work , the installation went as usual, and my new DSL system is now running. I loaded the icewm package after the hd install, I ran toram while installing but left the cd in. Everything is nearly perfect, but everything can get better, so I have acouple of questions. They are in order of priotity. 1. How can I get my swedish keyboard persistent on a hdinstallation? With the old 0.4.8 version I didn't get it to work on the cd but on the harddisk I only put my keyboard map in /etc/console renamed boottime.kmap.gz to old.boottime.kmap.gz and the rename my keymap boottime.kmap.gz. Rebooting I had the keyboard map I wanted. Now it works alrigt on the cd with a common loadkeys -> exit windowmaker -> startx and it's done. But I can't get it persistent on harddisk the usual way anymore. I've tried to put my keyboard map in the /etc/console-tools renaming it default.kmap.gz while renaming the old one something else. Nothing helps. There are some kind of sed script, but as I don't know sed and I don't know if it is the rigt thing to do I don't really know what I shall do. It works quite well so I don't want to screw it up. 2. When I installed while toram and with icewm running I first did it for enhanced mode, then mkliloboot didn't do any working lilo at all and the linux24 image was corrupted so it didn't boot the system from any other bootloader either. Next time my configuration (toram, icewm) was the same and I tried standard mode. Then lilo owerwrote my xosl bootloader in the mbr but didn't boot the DSL system at all but all the other botted well with the new lilo. I did liked my xosl I thought but as it works then it's not very traumatic. Anyway I decided to install without icewm running but in toram leaving the cd in the cdplayer for security. It made a working system after what I could see, but it didn't ask for where to put lilo so I made a pivot_root, edited lilo.conf to make lilo stay out of mbr and ran it. After rebooting I realised that lilo was corrupted, but it shouldn't be because the last rewrite of it was to the dsl partition. I Looked up my dos bootdisk, loaded it, and restaured xosl. Rebooting I went to my new working dsl0.9.1 installation. I must say I'm a little confused by my impression that icewm can interfere with lilo. I'm sure there are explanations and I would be excited to know them. 3. I managed to get user dsl to have icewm as window system but not for root. It's not abig problem and it have the advantage to signalize who I am by the running window manager. But I'm curious how it should be done if I wanted. Should be done means in this case to use the installed icewm and get it to work for root, not to install it once more for root. 4. Are there some people who are already running Lazarus on DSL, or even someone who have remastered DSL-LiveCD with Lazarus. Thankful for tips'n'tricks. By the way: Great Work! Cheers |
