Some clarification here:
Only the "standard" distribution of DSL v0.9.3, i.e., the isolinux version has the user contributed mod of formatting the partition via mke2fs -j which produces the journal file. Using the minus j  option of the mke2fs is not recommended for older, slower, or ram constraint systems. The journal file can be quite a hit on disk, ram, and cpu. The syslinux version of DSL which is produced for the older machines does not currently provide for this option. This option was suggested in the past and was rejected. It is currently only offered in the isolinux version.
