This is my problem I downloaded and burned a copy of dsl on cd. I would to put it on an old compaq laptop- but here's the catch - its one with a multibay - meaning you can have either floppy or cd. so your seeing my problem- where do I find a boot floppy image (that has drivers for CD) that will format my HD to linux and then run the install from the CD?I hear that this distro is fast on old laptops and I would love to save the OS to the HD but Im having problems getting started. BTW I would probably put DSL on a whole HD (ie no dual boot) help... Posted by zband on Feb. 17 2005,03:49
Just to clarify - I can put dos on to the hd (this is the HD that I will put DSL on) and copy the CD driver to it. but what program do I click on the CD to install it?

I'm guessing this laptop won't let you boot from CD. I use a small boot disk called BootIt NG (check it out at < TeraByte Unlimited BootIt NG >) for partitioning and formatting without a working OS (it can be installed to the hard drive as a boot loader as well), it should let you boot from the CD. Otherwise you might be able to copy the contents of the DSL boot floppy to the HD using a DOS boot floppy, probably preferred if you copy these to an ext2 partition set as the primary boot part. though.Have a look around on the forums (there's a search function at the top right, make sure you check From the beginning ), but primarily you will find that from DSL you can part. and format with fdisk or cfdisk, which you can run from the command line. The HD install script is found either on the App->Tools menu as "Install to Hard Drive", or sudo dsl-hdinstall from the command line. Hope this helps |
