i am completly new to Linux.... i got DSL booted from the cd, and now its on the desktop or something like that... theres the DSL logo in the center of the screen with something stuff on the right and bottom of the screen..... now i wanted to install DSL to my hdd..... i was reading the DSL Documentations, and i got to "2.b - Installing DSL to the Hard Disk" and it says to open up the xterminal window......

now how do i open that up or where is it, i tried looking around, but couldnt find it.......

Do you have any icons in the top left of the desktop.  I think the one that's in the extreme top-left is the terminal icon.

If you don't have that try clicking on the desktop (maybe its a right-click, I don't have DSL in front of me at the moment). That should present a menu list. Move the mouse over the entries and see if you can find one for a termnal.  When you get it right you'll have a window open that looks like an old DOS screen, if that helps any...

Good luck

...well idk now, for some reason, i cant boot to DSL with the cd.......

when i turn on the comp, it starts the process of booting DSL, everything goes great until it gets to loading the desktop......  right when it starts loading the desktop, it goes back to the black screen and at the bottom it says:

/home/dsl/.xinitrc line7:   313 Bus error            fluxbox
waiting for X server to shut down
dsl@tty1[dsl]$

......how can i fix this?

well i got it installed now, and it loads successfully, but theres no icons on the desktop....  how would i get the icons on there?

I'd suggest you post some more information about your computer maybe some of the experts on this board can help.

What brand computer or type of CPU, amount of memory,  video card, that kind of stuff.

I assume you are running DSL from a live CD and doing the install from that.  Am I correct?

What file did you download to burn the CD?

rightclick the desktop and a menu comes up ... one of the entries on it is desktop I believe that will have an entry that opens to the right which says, Icons only & Fully Enhanced desktop.  Try Icons only to start, as I don't know what the enhanced one does really...it doesn't look different to me.

....the brand of the computer is a Gateway 2000, my CPU is a Pentium 133mhz MMX, i have about 50MB of RAM, the video is onboard, which its prob ATI, cuz theres an ATI chip on the motherboard, it also says: "3d RAGE II" on the chip......, my hdd is about 350MB......
......i got it installed, but idk if its installed successfully tho.....the filename i used to burn the cd is: "dsl-0.9.3.iso"...... i burned it at 4x

......i tried to right-click and clicking on "Icons Only" and "Fully Anhanced Desktop".... but nothing happened

You need to use a higher graphics resolution.

The desktop icons will not appear when running lower resolution / color depths.

I don't know what the enhanced one does really...it doesn't look different to me.

"Icons only" starts xtdesk, which gives you your icons.  "fully enhanced" starts xtdesk, fluxter, and the dockapps. "No icons" closes xtdesk.

If you already have a fully enhanced desktop running and click on "icons only" i think it doesn't do anything....seems like maybe fluxter and dockapps should be closed in this case.

HAH!..... i wasnt even thinking about my video resolution.... that would explain it all...  the monitor im using is really old and it cant support even the normal res or high resolution...... cuz when it first starts to boot from the cd, i have to press F2 and change my video settings....... otherwise when it goes to the next screen, everything is all blury.........

.....well the installation was perfect, not one error.....but everytime i load DSL, a page about DSL comes up.......how would i make it so that page doesnt come up anymore?
Posted by mikshaw on Feb. 24 2005,15:19
First, you have to read the information on that page....it won't go away until it is read.

then come to the #damnsmalllinux irc channel.
you will be asked 50 random questions about the content of this getting started.
if you answer 45 of more of good
you will get the code to remove the popup.

Humor aside,

It will be good if you read the documentation and also the documentation on the damnsmalllinux.org main web site.

Then for information on how to get rid of the getting started, try searching the forums for keyword

getting AND started

and then search ALL FORUMS and search FROM THE BEGINNING or NEWER

Also, if you are having trouble getting to the window title bar to resize any big windows (if you are only using 640x480 resolution), you can hold the ALT key down and then click on the window and drag it down until the title bar is visible.

You can then use the maximize or resize buttons at the upper right corner of the window title in order to use the program on such a small desktop size.

When you right click on the desktop you should, all things being equal, see a menu.  Can you let us know if you can get that far?

Never mind.   :p
