Why wont it install right. :(Forum: HD Install Topic: Why wont it install right. :( started by: DeathsArmor Posted by DeathsArmor on Mar. 09 2005,02:45
I'm a noob to linux period, but i am reading and catching on to how to use it and so on. i'm having some difficulty install DSL on my laptop. what i would like to do is set up windows xp home and DSL both on my laptop. that way i can work on windows or linux. but i'm having more then some dificulty with DSL. i've gone and installed XP on the most part of my HD. and reserved a little under a gig to set up a linux partition going to cfdisk the the root terminal provided. theres the ntfs partition which is HDA1. and the theres a linux primary (HDA2) with about 700mb. fallowed by a second linux partition which is a linux-swap (HDA5) partition about 300 mb. then i quit cfdisk and type in "dsl-hdinstall" into the root terminal. telling it to go to HDA2. when i'm asked what partion. then selecting "e" for enhanced install. saying yes to net connect and answering yes untill it starts downloading info and it says......The copying of system files has been completed. Setting up /root/n Setting up /home/dsl/ tar: Removing leading `/' from member names cp: cannot stat `/mnt/bootimg/boot/isolinux/lin24': No such file or directory The installation process is finished. The next step is the boot loader. Do you want to run mkliloboot now? (y/...): y dev/root on / type ext2 (rw) /dev/scd0 on /cdrom type iso9660 (ro) /dev/cloop on /KNOPPIX type iso9660 (ro) /ramdisk on /ramdisk type tmps (rw,size=98564k) /proc/bus/usb on proc/bus/usb type usbdevs (rw,devmode=0666) /dev/hda2 on /mnt/hd type ext2 (rw) gzip: /mnt/l1/boot/isolinux/minirt24.gz: no such file or directory mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0, or too many mounted file systems umount: /mnt/l1: not mounted Setting up boot loader (LILO) into the master boot record.. part: /dev/hda1, typ:7 Warning: '/proc/partitions' does not exist, disk scan bypassed Fetal: open /boot/linux24: No such file or directory }The lilo boot installation process is finished. You must reboot to continue the final stage of the hard drive install. reboot now? (y/...): y And when all that is said and done with i do restart my laptop. to only have it say no OS. what really gets me is every disk i've made for DSL wont work on my laptop except for one disk with DSL 0.9.2 on it. i've even tried to get my laptop to work with the older copies of DSL and i get have it do a little bit and then it just sits there. with "aic7xxx.o" in purple letter and just stop with every other copy i have of DSL (i have about 15 now. using my wifes "computer to make the live cds). If there is anyone out there who has any remote clue of what the hell is going on on my laptop with this stuff or how to fix it PLEASE! HELP! ME! :'('''''' your insane new noob to ask everyone for help, DeathsArmor P.S. i have a Dell inspron 2650 w/ a 20gb hd and 128 ram Posted by reidar on Mar. 10 2005,08:23
I have done some research for you, and it might be that the problem (or one of the problems) has to do with your hardware, i.e. your Dell Inspiron. If you visit this link:< http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/dell.html > you see that several people seem to have had problems installing linux on this computer. I guess you should take a closer look at the two guys who have tried to install Debian on it, since DSL is based on Debian. Perhaps they have found some tricks. In our office we got new computers last summer, and I got a Dell Optiplex 270. Tried to install Linux (Debian, SuSE, Knoppix, DSL...) on it, but I really couldn't make it work. Seems like an issue with the graphics card Dell used in it. So, I had to stick with my older computer, where Linux is running happily. Moral is that not all computers are happy with Linux, unfortunately, but there are lots of smart guys out there, and some of them might have found a solution to a similar problem. Also, I thought DSL had problems dual-booting with XP, but I might be wrong about that.... -r Posted by DeathsArmor on Mar. 10 2005,21:04
thanks reidar, i see wat your saying about the hardware issue. but my gut feeling is saying its not. now thats not to say your not right about that issue either. i'm going to try to log into my irc account and chat on in the dsl portion of it. and as for beig able to boot with XP. theres a loop hole on a way to do that. but you have to be able to boot into DSL first. so you can go into cfdisk and then change what partition is the boot partition. the one problem i think i'm really having is formating the one partition in linux. cfdisk access the hd for sure because i'm seeing the light lighting up. but it just doesn't make sence to me. because on the install its saying something about not being able to find the dev directory or something like that. to be honest i don't quiet think it would be affected by my hardware. because i've never had this problem with lie cd for linux until now. which is even stranger. if theres anyone out there with any advice or suggestions please post your thoughts here.
