I've tried to re-install dsl from a screw-up of LILO. I even downloaded & reburned 8.0.3, that uses Scite instead of Beaver. I format the partition, "mkfs -t /dev/hda11", reboot the machine, do a hard drive install, say yes to 'mkliloboot' & yes to reboot. I reboot straight to Win98SE. I boot from the DSL CD & check hda11/boot, no linux. I copy a backup I have of it into the boot folder, run 'mkliloboot' & reboot. Still nothing. Why can I not get lilo to install?? I love DSL & use it to control all my other OS's. Could someone please tell me how to get this right. It doesn't matter if I do Standard or Ehanced install, same thing either way. Please help. Thanks.

I tried it again with enhanced install. Said no to 'mkliloboot'. The did 'sudo -u root mkliloboot'. I have tried it three times, once on hda, once on hda1 & once on hda11. Still no lilo for boot. Do you think that "Gag45" bootloader I tried, could have screwed up my boot for a lilo install?? I'd hate to do it, but if I have to, I'll start from a clean HD again. Takes about a day & a half, but still a pain in the but. Please can someone help??

You may need to resize or rearrange partitions to get your DSL installation down below HD cylinder 1024, if that is the problem.  Otherwise, lilo won't install to the HD.

I think I'll just redo all the linuxes on my linux partitions & put DamnSmall on the first. That would put it on hda8, which is what I've always had it on before. I install all the others first, because they use grub, then do a 'fdisk /mbr' & then install DSL & lilo. Never thought moving it to the end would hurt. Wish me luck.  ???

Why not simply continue using Grub?, and add an entry for DSL to it ?

There is docs in the documentation, and in the forums , for the needed syntax..

I don't like grub. My lilo.conf I write totally from scratch, except for the last few lines that lead to empty Win drives. I've never been able to get grub to work right. Besides, lilo is faster & cleaner, more in a DOS screen than all the show. The only one I can't get on lilo is Mepis, but I know this time how to use Gag45 to boot it. Thanks anyway.

I moved DamnSmallLinux closer to the frount of the drive. It has to be low on the HD to work proper. I put it on hda8 & moved everything else. Now all of them work off the DSL lilo.conf.. I like it better. It's in DOS format no pics or frills, just the names in a little graph box. Now, hopefully if I don't screw things up. Setup is perfect. I'll play around with Mepis more & let you know what I think. I also run Xandros, Ubuntu & Linspire. This is the first time I've got them all to work with dsl's lilo.  I wrote the lilo mostly by hand and use folders for the other OSs in "/mnt/" with the proper files in them. Hell, I'm scared to play with it now. I just know I'll screw something up. Wish me luck for at least a few weeks.  ???
