How to do a DiskOnModule (DOM) installForum: HD Install Topic: How to do a DiskOnModule (DOM) install started by: Pascal Posted by Pascal on May 02 2005,20:14
Hi all, I'd like to put DSL on a DOM (DiskOnModule) with 128MB, on an VIA MII 6000E board, but for now, I only was sucessful in booting from CD-ROM or USB-Key (Kingston 256MB). I simply don't know where to start, I think the HDD install guides I saw here do not apply, as they talk about big partitions, swap files etc. I dont want the DSL to write on the DOM, I want it to behave as if it were on a CD-ROM... And trying to do a frugal_usb on the DOM didn't work that great. Did anyone already do a bootable DOM installation, and make sure that it does not write on the DOM when it runs, because writing on a flash-based disk like DOM reduces their lifetime. Any hints or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, </Pascal> Posted by roberts on May 02 2005,21:18
If the DOM can be seen as hda then use frugal. I have used it many times on CF with ide adapters.Trying to use frugal_usb install on such means fiddling with the geometry of the device. The frugal_usb, and/or the current install to Pen Drive uses Syslinux and supports booting from BIOS as a USB-ZIP device. See docs for more info. I also have a new script that automates a BIOS boot from USB-HDD. As soon as I can have access to post it. I will. If the machine supports booting from USB-HDD, then this might be a good option, as well. No geometry issues. I am sure that there are probably a half dozen other ways too. |
