DSL multi OS and mklilobootForum: HD Install Topic: DSL multi OS and mkliloboot started by: Hybrid Posted by Hybrid on May 03 2005,12:34
Hi everybodyI´m installing dsl on a pentium 100 with 80 mb of ram. I used the floppy to boot and dsl recognized tthe iso i extract to disk. I have a swap created and a 1GB ext2 ready to do the hdisntall.During the dsl-hdinstall script, i'm prompted to start the execution of mkliloboot. In the same pc i have windows98 installed. Will the mkliloboot destroy the ability to boot to windows98? With options/configuration is required so i can boot both the OS's(windows98 and dsl)? Thanks Posted by mikshaw on May 03 2005,13:46
If you need both windows and linux in your bootloader, the windows bootloader will likely need to be replaced. Windows doesn't support non-windows operating systems.I've heard that it's possible to tweak a windows bootloader (boot.ini) to boot linux, but i haven't tried it and haven't heard much about it, so i assume it's not widely recommended. I don't know if windows will be automatically detected in mkliloboot, but it is definitely supported...you can add the windows partition to lilo.conf after it is created. Another option is using Grub instead of Lilo. If things go bad and you want your old bootloader back, windows has a tool to "repair" the mbr. Posted by Hybrid on May 03 2005,14:16
If I can add the line to the lilo.conf file that works for me!!! Can you just post a sample line that could represent an entry for the windows OS suposing that windows is located in /dev/hda1?Where can i find that tool that to repair/fix the mbr for windows? Posted by mikshaw on May 04 2005,02:25
< http://www.control-escape.com/linux/lilo-cfg.html >The tool is built into windows...i don't know much about 9x, but the NT-based systems have a "fixmbr" command which has done the job for me in the past....maybe it was "fixboot"...can't remember Posted by Hybrid on May 04 2005,09:14
My current problem is that i have lilo intalled but i can not boot DSL. In lilo boot i see the 2 options Linux and Windows. When i choose Linux my computer hangs...Thanks I will test the lilo.conf file to see if i can solve the problem.... Posted by meo on May 04 2005,09:24
Hybrid! You can recover the original mbr using the win 98 boot-disk. Let it boot and give the following command: fdisk /mbr and just reboot as if nothing has happened. Keep on having fun, meo P.S. If you have just one win-partition it will most probably be possible to boot both win 98 and dsl from lilo D.S. Posted by jimbo62 on May 06 2005,23:46
I am late to this thread, but, when you install lilo to the MBR of the boot drive, it finds all other OSs on your system and presents you with the boot options at the next boot. If this didn't happen, you might not have installed lilo correctly or you don't have a proper DSL installation.Let me know if you want an example DSL lilo.conf with a Win98 and a DSL boot option. Good luck, jimbo

did you run the lilo command as root after setting up lilo.conf?if not, then that is very likely your problem (methinks). As for fixing the mbr for win98, it's quite simple. boot from a win98 boot floppy ( a real boot floppy, not a startup disk made from inside windows). Once you're at a dos command prompt, (an A:\ prompt), type: fdisk /mbr That will wipe the mbr for you and the next time you start your machine, win98 will replace its entry in the mbr. WARNING: this method assumes that win98 is located in the active partition! EXTRA WARNING: DO NOT do this on an NT, 2000 or XP machine! |
