I hade DSL running on an old laptop. Everything is great except firefox is slow and it takes a long time to boot up. Is there a way to narrow down the types of hardware that the startup is looking for in a effort to make things a little quicker?

I have 90 some megs of ram but a very slow processor and I think that this is the majority of my problem.

Thanks for your help!

Disable hardware detection for stuff you don't have, like USB, agp ports, etc.

Use the minimal theme in fluxbox, and turn off the icons and the dock apps.

Try booting with this at the boot prompt:

failsafe noicons

Choose the "Minimal" fluxbox style to speed up your window manager performance.

Then use the opera.uci MyDSL extension instead of Firefox.  Customize the Opera Toolbars to get rid of the extra junk and create more usable room for web page display.

you need to edit a file called knoppix-autoconfig under /etc/init.d go there and comment out (add # at the begining of the line) the options you don't need. this has made a huge difference in my case.
