Hi to alli am new to DSL and i wish to install it on my P100 64meg ram. i've plenty of hdd space since i've got a 1.2Gb hdd, but what i need is a stable system that lets me do everything i am doing now with winzozze. I need complete internet support with dialup modem, sound support, email, newgroup, gaim, and a good web browser that supports java. and most important a rock solid system that has complete graphic interface to be used even by my mother. Is DSL the right one for me? Thanks! Posted by clivesay on June 05 2005,14:13
You are in a place that's partial to DSL but I would say absolutely.I know this will shock people because I'm a frugal install advocate, but in this case I would recommend a regualr HD install since you want gaim. That is a gtk2 app and would fill up 64mb of ram quickly I would think. Maybe someone else can give their $.02 worth? Good Luck! Chris Posted by Nevermore on June 05 2005,15:13

Do this.Download DSL iso and burn it to CD-r disk. Create a 128MB linux swap partition or create a DOS swap file. Do a hard disk install from the menu. Install Synaptic from the menu and close down Synaptic after install is completed. Open a root xterminal and type: sudo beaver /etc/apt/sources.list Put a "#" in front of the "stable" line Remove the "#" in front of the "testing" line. Save and exit beaver apt-get update exit Then start Synaptic again and use it to install gaim and firefox. Install the Java extension from the myDSL repository. Then enable Java for Firefox. If firefox runs too slowly on your computer, install the opera.tar.gz extension from the myDSL repository and enable Java for Opera. Customize the opera toolbars to reduce all of the extra clutter on your screen and change the homepage to something less busy like google.com or damnsmalllinux.org There are more detailed instructions for the installation process in the built-in DSL start page, the DSL documentation site, and finally can also be found by Searching the forums and choose search ALL FORUMS and search FROM THE BEGINNING or NEWER. The search tool is weird here. By default, it searches multiple keywords as an "OR" search, so if you want to find a post that contains both "swap" and "partition", you need to enter keywords: swap AND partition. Good Luck. I believe with 64Meg of ram and 128Meg swapspace or partition, you will be pleasantly pleased with the responsiveness of DSL, however even with a mega machine Firefox takes a bit of grinding to get loaded and rolling...but even with 64Megs it will scoot!Brian AwPhuch |
