Getting nowhere trying to boot DSL 1.2. It will start the kernal during the install, recognize the hd, then the cd-rom, then vapor locks with "Bad EIP value"."Unable to handle kernal NULL pointer dereference at 0000000000
... Code: Bad EIP value."
System is an NEC Powermate v133e (Classic Pentium, 133 mHz) with a Polaroid BurnMax32 CD burner, 48 meg memory, and two hard drives, a 15 gig Maxtor and a 1 gig Western Digital.
Both are tied to a Promise Ultra ATA-66 controller card. Both have been checked and verified to be error-free. Both drives have been wiped clean, and a 5 gig primary FAT32 partition has been created.
The 15 gig Maxtor is primary master, the WDC is primary slave, the CD burner is secondary master.
I can get the system to boot from a Win98 floppy, and I can even run an install CD for Win98SE, but I can't get Linux to boot from a CD in the drive - BIOS is configured to check CD drive, floppy, then HD - nor from a floppy.
Clues appreciated.

Try booting with:failsafe mem=48M
Type this command in exactly as listed above. In other words,
dsl failsafe MEM=48m
is WRONG. Don't begin with "dsl" and "mem" must be lowercase and "48M" must be uppercase.

Gave it a shot, no joy. It yields more reporting on the screen about what's going on, but the end result is exactly the same error message as before.Any idea what the EIP value is in reference to? I've tried Googling on it, but can't seem to pin down a coherent explanation.

Usually the message immediately prior to the "Bad EIP value" is more important.It also may be possible to find solutions by searching google with your hardware model numbers and either "linux" or "knoppix" for an additional keyword, ie:
Promise xxx-154g linux
or
Promise XXX-154G EIP
and see what you get.

Still haven't found out how to save my documents when I power down. I tried using "koppix.swp file" didn't save one word or dot. I like DSL and will keep using it and playing with it for now and use my other os for documents and such. This is a great time to be interested in OS's, there is alot going on and alot of it has just begun. Beekers:(
