Hi,
I have been using my DSL frugal install for a while and I discovered during boot up it really wants me to run e2fsck.  What I've seen of this is that it will end up formatting my partitions and axing my data.  Could someone please explain what it does and if I need to do it?

Thanks,
Louis

It is only a disk check, similar to scandisk for M$ ..

It detects either an error, which it wants to resolve,
or, the partition has reached its max number of mounts,
and just wants to run 'thru the motions'

Bootup with a LiveCD, open a root shell, and run
e2fsck /dev/hdXx ( Xx = your partition )

Let it run thru its routine,
usuallly answering yes to anything it wants to fix.

Then run DSL as usual, and your messages should disappear.
( till the next time )

I have never had any ill effects from running this,
unless the HD was truly corrupted or damaged..

It says that if I run it while a file system is mounted it may cause severe damage.  Should I do it anyway?

DO NOT mount any drives or partitions..

Follow my above instructons, from LiveCD, and you 'll be fine..

If unsure, look at your mount.app in your dock, and see that
no partitions are mounted first before starting to run e2fsck
( hda1, hda2, hdb1, etc.. )

ok, works for everything except hda2 (swap partition), still going through hda3 right now, it's really hosed up, with any luck maybe this will fix my memory issue

good deal..

Swap partitions aren't formatted ext2, so no need for e2fsck..
It will just ignore it with some silly error about not found anyway.

Good Luck
