I finally achieved my hd install of dsl. Rebooted my coomputer and there are no graphics on the monitor. No elephants, no icons.  Did I do something wrong?  I tried right click, desktop, etc., etc. but still nothing.

Try changing the resolution and color depth for your video. It sounds like your color depth is set too low.

Press CONTROL-ALT-BACKSPACE to exit graphical mode and then type:

xsetup.sh

and then choose a different resolution and color depth.

Then type "startx" to return to graphical mode.

Hmmm.
CONTROL-ALT-BACKSPACE does nothing. It does not take me out of graphical mode.  Still blank screen.

This is not good.

Does CONTROL-ALT-DEL cause Linux to shut down?

It causes the computer to reboot.
sudo shutdown -h now
will shut down the computer.

What happens if you boot the livecd with:

dsl vga=normal 2
