trying to get soundcard going downloading mydsl ext.entions

I goto mydsl-system-gnu-utils.dsl-download & get "non dsl user error". same for other apps.

I am logged in as root.. what gives?

Try  it as user dsl.

Most of the time you gotta be root, but sometimes you gotta be dsl. Haven't figured out yet when it's the latter.

You should never install myDSL applications as any user other than dsl, especially not as root.  Things can break.

Use root for installing Deb packages or source, but never myDSL.

hmm-well i flashed on logging on as dsl after I posted this & d/l's some stuff but now I don't remember if I installed as root or dsl.

I installed alsa & have a lot of the snd modules loading now but with warnings.

Anyone know how to see the warnings?

this will probably do it:
dmesg | less

Ignore the warnings.

I get them too and the sound still works fine.

My dsl hd install is still silent otherwise I would ignore the warnings. I was able to run alsamixer but couldn't turn on the audigy or analog sliders.

I didn't see the warnings in dmesg but found them in /var/log/messages:

I'm wondering if its that dma= stuff though I've never had to manually enter that b4.

I have a kanotix hd install & debian on this box with working sound & was looking for a command or something that might give more details so I can maybe compare. Or maybe those distros aren't very comparable to dsl?
