Big problem installing manuallyForum: HD Install Topic: Big problem installing manually started by: alexh Posted by alexh on Aug. 03 2004,02:42
Hi,first off i don't have (immediate) access to a cd-burner, thats why i decided to install DSL by hand. I added a spare 4GB drive to ide1 slave, so my ide config looks like: primary master, 40GB Maxtor primary slave, ATAPI CD-ROM sec. master, ATAPI ZIP drive 250 MB (additional problem, see further down) sec. slave, 4GB Seagate With toms linux distro on floppy (a 2.2.20 kernel and busybox) I fdisked the drive with 3 primary partitions and formatted hdd2 and hdd3 with ext2. on hdd3 is the 2.7.3 iso of DSL. Additionaly hdd1 is fdisked bootable and I dd'ed the boot.img on it (for faster booting, cause i needed it so often). Then I followed exactly the frugal script code except with the wget and bootdisk part deleted. $SOURCE was hdd3 and $TARGET was hdd2. It executed with no problem, and I manually verified that I have a clean hdd2/KNOPPIX directory with the expanded ISO image. And now comes the pain in the ass, no matter what boot options (i.e. dsl fromhd=/dev/hdd2) I try, always give the same result: ide-scsi: hdc: unsupported command in request queue(0) ide-scsi: hdc: unsupported command in request queue(0) ide-scsi: hdc: unsupported command in request queue(0) ide-scsi: hdc: unsupported command in request queue(0) ide-scsi: hdc: unsupported command in request queue(0) ide-scsi: hdc: unsupported command in request queue(0) ide-scsi: hdc: unsupported command in request queue(0) ldm_validate_partition_table(): Diskread failed ide-scsi: hdc: unsupported command in request queue(0) ide-scsi: hdc: unsupported command in request queue(0) ide-scsi: hdc: unsupported command in request queue(0) ide-scsi: hdc: unsupported command in request queue(0) [this takes forever, and I'm willing to drop support for my zip after succesfull installing DSL] pderaid: Error reading suberblock pderaid: Error reading suberblock hptraid: Error reading suberblock hptraid: Error reading suberblock hptraid: Error reading suberblock hptraid: Error reading suberblock silraid: Error reading suberblock [what`s dat?!] And then DSL seems to search for knoppix filesystem but reports me it`s sorry (thank you for being at least sorry to not find any knoppix filesystem and drops me to a minimal shell. Please guys help me, I've already spent hours and it really starts pissing me off. Alex Posted by roberts on Aug. 03 2004,02:59
Looks like this approach is a combination of three.Since you are familiar with tomsrtbt disk, I would suggest you try the following approach: < http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....1;t=130 > Posted by alexh on Aug. 03 2004,10:37
the stupid thing is, I did it this way, except I cancelled the wget part in the script, cause I already had dsl-2.7.3.iso in %SOURCE. The script whatsoever didnt give errrors... Alex Posted by alexh on Aug. 05 2004,21:35
Well, I gave up on it. Perhaps it will work with 0.8...

yoy mention using dsl fromhd from this i asume you have a recent working cd if you have you can use that to load a frugal install (it's in tools) from file point it at mnt/hda-wherever your iso is at to your free partition you can then boot that with dslfromdhs-your instal point if you then want to you can do a regular hd install. I hope this helps........I neither have a cd burner and i update everytime useing this method i keep the frugal instal as a backup as if something happens to my hd install ie bad download i simply boot the frugal and then reinstal

thx, I now even managed to install on hdd1 by unpluggin da Zip-Drive, but ever since then it just hangs hard with "rewriting modules.dep ....". Not even the reset button works, funny things....

I'd try a fresh instal without the zip, you can always mount that later...
