Well, first off, don't type in all caps, it's ever so slightly annoying.Next, after you have downloaded your copy of Damn Small Linux (it should be called something like damnsmall-0.6.2.iso) open Ahead Nero, close the dialog bog that opens, you can't do this through the disk burning wizard (at least I don't think I can.) Click on "File" and go down to the option that says "Burn Image" (it should say something like that anyway.) A new dialog box should open asking you to select the image you wish to burn, browse to wherever you saved damnsmall-0.6.2.iso and select it. Then finish the burning process as normal. Now place the CD in the CD-ROM of the computer you wish to use Damn Small Linux on and restart (or start) that computer. If it's still not starting up from the CD you may have to enter you computer's BIOS settings and set it to attempt to start from the CD before the Hard Drive. I won't go into detail on how to do that because there are as many different ways to do it as there are different brands of computer. Hope that helps Posted by SCOTT-137 on April 02 2004,23:04
Sorry about all caps. I know how to manipulate bios but boot from cd is not an option. I downloaded boot, root,& rescue but I can't put them on a floppy ,to big. Only have 1.4 mb floppies. Will they work from cd in windows ??Thank You !!! Posted by Rapidweather on April 04 2004,14:40
About the hard drive install...I have one of my DSL remasters running on a 540 MB hard drive now, using my "/knoppix" method, with a boot floppy detailed here: < http://www.angelfire.com/ms/telegram/general_howto > --- That way requires a boot floppy. I only have two partitions on this little drive, one for /knoppix, and a swap partition. I restore from a floppy, as with this remaster, I only need dial up settings for wvdial, and Sylpheed mail's /Mail, and .sylpheed. --- Later on today, I will completely redo this setup, and use /usr/sbin/frugal_instal.sh (A script by Robert Shingledecker to install from a live cd to the hard drive, included in 0.6.2) For my partitions, I need more swap, so I will partition the drive with 150 mb for Damn Small, 50 mb for restore, and the rest for Swap. I'll use bootE linux on a floppy to do the partition and format work. Then I'll boot the system up from my remastered cd, (as my original setup will be gone), and run the script. I'll first go ahead and place the backup.tar.gz and the filetool.lst in the restore (/dev/hda2) partition, as one of the items in the frugal_instal.sh script asks about that. --- When done, I'll have a system that will boot using lilo (no more boot floppy), and since it is done off a remaster, It will already have Firefox and wvdial, which will keep the restore process to a miminum, size and time wise. I could continue to use the floppy for restore, but since I will have both /upload and /download directories in /home/damnsmall, and will possibly want to keep stuff there, then I will go ahead and restore from the hard drive. --- I'll get back here when I have more to report. Hope some of this helps. --- |
