i was thinking of doing a hard drive install and then install kde gnome , other programs etc using apt-get

is it possible?

It is possible, but it defeats the philosophy of DSL, which is small and light.

A better solution might be to download and hd install the latest version of Knoppix or Gnoppix, which come with KDE or Gnome respectively.

you see, i already have a debian system installed. I have 3 hard drives on this machine . hda with linux hdb with dvds, movies etc and hdc is empty

i need to do something with hdc :) :) so i was thihnking of installing damn small and slowly built it with the packages i only want etc

You should be able to install KDE or Gnome like any other Debian Package. The only watchout is that the DSL distro uses the TinyX Krdive XWindows server instead of the standard XFree86 server.  If KDE or Gnome packages need Xfree86 then you will need to change your XWindows server over to the standard XFree86 server.

Good Luck.
