how much space for kdeForum: HD Install Topic: how much space for kde started by: nixswitcher Posted by nixswitcher on Aug. 27 2005,20:44
Parent's wintel box hdd developed errors again last month, won't boot. This made me really want to get them on dsl and cf-ide (on order with pqi 512mb cf).I've tried both dsl 1.4 and knoppix 3.9 live cds. I love the fact that dsl doesnt need all that much ram, especially for toram (pii350 256mb). But i also want an easier desktop/window manager like kde. I love the hide-able panel, easy for mouse users (also planning on getting an hp tc1100 tablet when refurbs or surplusses show up). But i don't like how much heavy apps are installed with knoppix. My questions are: 1. How much more space would kde (and xfree86?) need on top of dsl? 2. Will kde work on dsl frugal installs? 3. Can fluxbox have hide-able panels like kde? Or are there alternatives for a hide-able application launcher panel? Posted by SaidinUnleashed on Aug. 27 2005,23:02
1. Xfree86 is available in the repository. KDE is very large, much, much larger than DSL, infact, and is very difficult to get working with DSL.2. No. Just, no. 3. right-click on the toolbar and slit and you can have them auto-hide. If you want a more windows-like gui in DSL, try IceWM, available in MyDSL. -J.P. I've got KDE installed on on of my systems, and it uses 322MB...maybe more if there are Qt files outside of /opt/kde3

Thanks for the answers. I want to use the kde panel to just hold application launch/shortcut icons and the clock. I like the way it hides into a tab, like the old mac-os panels. I'd rather have a button or tab like this dedicated to hide/unhide rather than autohide. It hides the icons and easy enough for most mouse users or tablet pc stylus users to grasp. I'm testing out the SLAX livecd right now, but toram doesnt work with 256mb as well as it did under dsl. I guess i'll try cutting down slax and see how that goes. Try the wmdrawer extension, sounds like it is what you are after.
