hi,i have a dsl 1.4, hd installed. Very changes with mydsl, like xfree86... how to upgrade, without lose the customization made since first instalation? thanks Posted by mikshaw on Oct. 06 2005,18:22
If you did a full traditional style (non-frugal) installation you will need to reinstall all your applications. There is no "upgrade" process in DSL. However, your personal configurations can be backed up and restored easily. Make sure home/dsl is in .filetool.lst and use the backup/restore tool to select a device on which to backup. After the installation, use the same tool to restore from your newly-created backup. But make sure the backup was successful before installing 1.5....there should be a backup.tar.gz file in the root of the device you chose.

thanks mikshawwith backup/restore tool, only personal configurations(none aplications) are "back-uped"? reinstall All applications not are my plans :-)... maybe in future... but, a "upgrade version" will be a excellent tool!! maybe in next version the developers think about that thanks again Posted by mikshaw on Oct. 06 2005,19:02
You can backup the configs for your applications, but the apps themselves need to be re-installed. The myDSL system makes installation very simple, though...you can put them all in a single directory and install them in one go with:
If you happen to know where all the files from every application are located, you can back those up, but it's really much easier just to reinstall. From what I've read here, an upgrade system is probably not going to be implemented any time soon, if ever. The harddrive install is an old process that seems to be of secondary importance to improving the more flexible frugal setup. Frugal is also much closer in behavior and appearance to the original liveCD system, so i assume that development of frugal from liveCD is a much more natural and simple process than trying to develop the liveCD into a traditional harddrive system. |
