How do I bypass the login prompt?  I want to build the 'ideal' system for my 79 year old Mom.  I know how to use sudo to allow her to run wvdial without using root.  Right now the system boots off HD and then in text mode asks for login.  After passing the login password everything goes good, but I want to avoid having to enter a password.  (If Mom needs real modifications and updates, I will ssh from 600 miles away, when she is online.)

 Thanks in advance..  Bill Savoie

One way:

Use 0.4.10. The good old days before DSL supported multiple users, auto logsin to user "damnsmall".

Anything for your 79 year old mom! And you don't have to go back to 0.4.10

There are two files that you need to change so that the behavior is the same as the liveCD.  First boot off the liveCD. Open a terminal window. sudo su  to get root access.  Now mount the hard drive partition that you installed to.

mount /dev/hda? /mnt/hda?        ? is the partiton number
cp /KNOPPIX/etc/inittab /mnt/hda?/etc/inittab
cp /.bash_profile /mnt/hda?/.bash_profile
exit
exit

then reboot.

Your hard drive installed system will work like the liveCD.
Good Luck, and I hope your mom will like it!
