I've got DSL installed on the hard drive of this old laptop, only problem is I'm having trouble making it remember things.  Settings such as IP address, and desktop settings (like not using those little annoying tabs) are lost when I shut down.  I've tried using backup/restore, but I'm having no luck, how do I specify where to backup and restore to and from? do I need to say /dev/hda3 or just hda3, and will DSL automatically restore when it boots?

Thanks

just "hda3" should do.  There is a GUI backup/restore tool in the system section of the menu, and the pertinent config file is /opt/.backup_device.
If hda3 is where DSL is installed, the backup should be restored automatically.  If you have more than one partition that contains a "backup.tar.gz" file in its root, you should probably specify "restore=hda3" in your bootloader's settings.  Otherwise, DSL should just search the partitions for backup.tar.gz and load the first one it finds.

The files that are backed up are listed in /home/dsl/.filetool.lst, with exclusions in .xfiletool.lst.  The default in DSL 1.5 is that just about everything in /home/dsl is backed up, so if your desktop setting are not being restored, i'd look at making sure the backup is being created.
