all,

i recently was given an old texas instruments travelmate 5000 laptop. it had slackware on it, but the previous owner hadnt installed X of any kind.

i messed around with and tried to get X working, but to no avail. so, on a whim, i pulled out DSL and tried the poor mans install method as the laptop only has a floppy drive. i was able to samba into another box on the network, i transfered the knoppix folder into slackwares / directory, put in the boot floppy, and wham bam, damn small appears to be running!

my question is, im a bit confused as to where to go with it at this point. is it possible to perform a real HD install now, and wipe slackware from it completely? im reluctant to just do it, because the knoppix directory is in there, and i didnt know what would happen. made more sense to ask here first.

so, can anyone assist?

basically, i guess what im saying  is :

my understanding of DSL is that it runs pretty much everything from your RAM when running it "live."

the poor mans install runs it from the HD, but its still "live", so could i still execute the HD Install script.

You can do a full hd-install of DSL while you are running from the poor man's installation or from livecd.

Just make sure that you don't delete the disk partition where your poor man's install is located.

Also, unless you have a decent chunk o' RAM installed on your system, creating a swap partition or a swap file would be a good idea.  If your old slackware install already had a swap partition, then chances are that DSL saw it and decided to use it automatically.

Good Luck.
