Frugal install questionForum: HD Install Topic: Frugal install question started by: thegreatkingdan Posted by thegreatkingdan on Oct. 20 2005,23:05
I've decided I want to do a frugal install on my "new" computer. It has a 500 mhz processor, 128 mb ram, and 15 gig hard drive. Anyway I've been doing some looking around on this site and found a lot of information but no explisit instructions anywhere. I've seen a lot of stuff about making a partition for the install and a swap partition (I don't even know what that is) and a partition for my data. Do I need to do this or can I just make one partition thats 15 GB. If I do need more partitions then how big should I make them? Thanks in advance.

You don't need to, but it will be useful at some point. It's always a good idea to have a small partition set up for swap just in case your ram gets filled. It's better, in my opinion, to have a swap and never use it than not to have swap when you need it. Another 128mb for swap would probably be sufficient. I have 1gb of swap on top of 256mb ram, which is excessive but is better than not enough....particularly since i also have a ram-hungry distro on this machine in addition to DSL.You might also consider creating a larger partition in case you want to try out persistent home and opt. This saves having to back up all of your personal configs, and is easier on your ram. If you do this then your main partition only needs to be large enough to store the CD, and you can save the rest for your personal stuff. If you do not want to do this, just make sure you use the "frugal" boot option so that you can write to your disk. Look in the download mirrors for a "pdfdocs" directory. This contains a step-by-step for installing frugal. Posted by adssse on Oct. 21 2005,12:44

Thanks for your help guys. I have a frugal install now. I really like DSL and the help I've gotten on this board. Thanks again.
