Ive got a neomagic chipset, on my laptop. I had to install the dsl to the hard disk using an adaptor at my friends house. Now i have the full hard disk install, but cannot find a way of accessing the lilo video setup for non vesa video. I run Xsetup.sh but it doesnt seem to save the settings (or makes no difference).

Also when dsl starts up i get a message saying you have passed an undefined mode number. Although i keep choosing 80x25 standard and again it doesnt seem to make a difference.

Please help
:(

I have neomagic on my old compaq laptop.

As a boot option, add fb800x600 (or whatever resolution).

You should be able to get that when running xsetup.sh as well.  Select the other option and not xvesa.

hope that helps :)

Also, does the boot loader effect the vga setup? I think i need to change the boot option from vesa to the other one. Im using Lilo does this matter?

edit the append line where it says "vga=xxx", then run lilo from bash, as root.

look in the wiki for a list of vga=xxx values.

all *nix OS use VI as thier default (and incredibly useful/powerful) editor

the others are addons and might not be there...but VI always is

What bootloader do you use??

Also from the graphical desktop (to kill X) just hit cntl-backspace

then type xsetup.sh to change

if i let X load it corrupts the screen so when i return to text mode i just get garbage. I have hit ctrl C just after logging on and have tried running xsetup with no effect.
I can see the desktop in X but its horrible and using about 4 colors. The mouse also leaves a square trail accross the screen.
I Have tried both grub and lilo with no luck. Although lilo geve me the penguin in the corner when i set vga to the proper setting, but the bottom of the screen was missing(as if there were too many lines)
Im afraid im close to giving up and putting the horrid win98 back on it :( which is a shame.
It would be great if someone could make a boot disk that detects, mounts and runs the linux cd, for those of us whoose cdroms dont boot. As it is i have to take the hard disk out, goto a friends and mount it via an adaptor in his desktop to use the CD to install it.
