Need a little helpForum: HD Install Topic: Need a little help started by: Olzon Posted by Olzon on Nov. 07 2005,17:20
Firstly, sorry for im one of all those who ask newbie questions, but i have no choice.I can't download DSL, because my network runs on a very slow dial-up, but i can download at school, something i did today. I downloaded DSL-1.4.ISO, and turned it to bootable CD. Isn't that one the LiveCd? or should i downloaded Current.ISO instead? Maybe i forgot to do something, or maybe i got the wrong ISO. But when i reboot my system with the CD the text terminal starts, not flushbox and the termilan says [DR-DOS] A:\> What would i do? my thoughts was to install DSL as the MainOS on the Hd, run it as the mainOS on a filesever. Anyway, thanks for a good Forum, i have spend some hours reading but as always, i got problems that i can't find any solution to. Posted by doobit on Nov. 07 2005,20:42
OK, download the DSL-1.5-syslinux.iso for safety, since I don't know what computer you want to run it on, and use Nero, or WinXPCd or something like that that can burn CDs from ISO images. Then use the command that burns from ISOs to burn the CD. Then, when you boot from the CD you should get a large DSL graphic with "boot:" at the bottom and boot choices when you punch F2 or F3.

My thought were to run DSL on a P2, Nero, yes i don't got anything else ;) and i manage to burn the ISO to an bootable CD, but i didn't get any graphical logo, just letters.I will try to download and crate two maybe three other CD's tomorow, any more hints. I'm nearly a first timer, only used a old Mandrake and Ubuntu server, nothing real complicated, just fooled around a bit. Posted by andrewb on Nov. 07 2005,22:47
The " [DR-DOS] A:\>" message you are getting is telling you that the computer is booting from a floppy disk you must have with DR-DOS on it in drive A. You need to get the computer to boot from the CD. You'll need to get into the BIOS set the computer to boot from the CD before the hard drive. It doesn't matter where in the boot order the floppy is, so long as you don't have a floppy in the drive when you boot the PC.If your computer has no option to boot from the CD you can still get started by using the bootable floppy for DSL. You'll' need to get the bootfloppy.img file & write it to a floppy (use e.g. rawwrite). If you then boot from the floppy with the cd in the drive as well you should be able to boot DSL (it should scan all available drives for the knoppix filesystem - this is the knoppix file in the knoppix directory on the cd - if it doesn't then you'll need to use the fromhd cheatcode [press F2/F3 at the DSL splash screen for info] in this case the cd will probably be hdc). Once you have DSL running I would use the frugal install option from the menu to set things up so it boots directly from the hard drive. Posted by cbagger01 on Nov. 10 2005,06:07
DO NOT SELECT "BOOTABLE CD" WHEN USING NERO.Instead, for Nero 5.x cancel out of the "wizards" and choose File -> Burn Image from the top menu. For Nero 6.x , cancel out of the express wizards and choose Recorder -> Burn Image from the menu. It should also be possible to burn the iso by opening up Windows Explorer and Double-Clicking on the *.iso file that you downloaded from the DSL web site. |
