Greeting to all of you, my fellow, wonderful Linux enthusiasts and friends:Not to be outdone, I also want to install Damn Small Linux to my old desktop computer (with my hardware specs below) So, 1. I Downloaded dsl-l.5 ISO at an internet café from one of your mirror sites at an HD, then burned it on a CD 2. At another computer, I expanded the ISO (from the CD) on HD using Windows and ExtractNow (the software claiming to expand ISO files, among others) 3. Then burned the expanded files to another CD using NERO 4. Next, I also downloaded bootfloppy.img via internet and created a bootdisk with Rawrite 5. Booted my home desktop computer using floppy (can’t boot from CD-ROM, no BIOS’ capability) 6. Pressed ENTER to begin installation 7. Out came these messages loading linux24 …. Loading minsrt24.gz … Can’t find KNOPPIX filesystem, sorry. Dropping you to a (very limited) shell Please reset button to quit. Additional builtin commands available Cat mount umount, etc. etc. KNOPPIX #_ 8. And it stopped there, and did not continue (as a newbie myself, didn’t know what commands to type next) My Question: How should I rightly be doing installing DSL? I NEED YOUR VALUABLE ADVICE AND HELPFUL RECOMMENDATIONS PLEASE My hardware specs: AMD-K5-PR133 CPU Base memory 640K Extended memory 15360K Cache 256K HD 6449MB, not yet partitioned for Linux Samsung CD-ROM 52X Max Thanks a lot! Do not expand the iso. Burn it as an image, and it will work.-J.P. Posted by mikshaw on Nov. 10 2005,15:35
Remove Step 2....the ISO file contains all the indfo needed to burn a CD, and expanding it in Windows is asking for trouble.Step 3 (now the new Step 2) should be to burn the ISO file "as a disk image". There should be something in Nero such as "File -> Burn Image". I'm not sure if that will fix any issues with booting from floppy, but it will prevent some other problems. Thanks your reply. Your advices were helpful. Got to copying iso to HD again and burning it on CD. While installation, pressed Enter at boot: (prompt). Some activity began, messages coming out until the monitor turned grey, yet with HDD and CD-ROM LEDs continously blinking. Left the computer that way for 1 and 1/2 hours. Got sick waiting, so turned the computer off. What was supposed to be the outcome of the seemingly computer suspended activity and what was I supposed to do next? Your assistance is required again, please.

Did you verify a good CD Burn? md5sum?( try booting it in another computer? ) Might be an isolinux issue with your PR133 boxen.. You could try the syslinux image. ( do you still have the floppy disk you made? ) You could try booting up with the floppy, while having the new CD you burned in the cdrom drive? Let us know.. 73 ke4nt Posted by I went to bed very late on Nov. 11 2005,22:43
FAT32 does change capital letters to noncapital ones. I had the same problem (I'm not sure what I wanted to do anymore). This was the problem I had. The KNOPPIX folder is written with capital letters. When copying it onto FAT32 the letters are not capitals anymore. Posted by romy_albano on Nov. 11 2005,22:45
Thanks for helping me out. Yes, tried burned iso cd on another compute. Several icons showed at desktop (e. g. firefox, etc). Bootfloppy still with me. Tried it, too. Both worked. Will try downloading syslinux.img (?) Will do. Happy to be receiving your expert opinions and knowledge to us who are just, you know, new to Linux.
