Anyone else make this mistake doing frugal upgradeForum: HD Install Topic: Anyone else make this mistake doing frugal upgrade started by: hawki Posted by hawki on Nov. 24 2005,21:38
HiMaybe someone else won't make my mistake. I had a frugal install of version 1.5 that I booted with GRUB. I had gotten in the habit of just replacing the KNOPPIX file when doing upgrades to the new version. When moving to version 2.0 things broke. My pcmcia card was no longer usable. To make a long story short I was still using the linux24 and minirt24.gz files from the previous version when booting up. The new modules and the old kernel were not compatible and would not load. Sooo, if you upgrade and still see messages about 2.4.26 going by, think about replacing linux24 and minirt24.gz with new ones. Good luck Posted by mikshaw on Nov. 24 2005,23:13
Yeah, I did the same thing with 2.0RC1 =o)

I had this problem when trying to go to 2.0rc1 also. I didnt know how to fix it so I just went back to 1.5. I plan on upgrading to 2.0 shortly but was worried about this problem again. If someone doesnt mind would you be willing to put a step by step of how to correct this. I am still kinda fuzzy on this. Thanks in advance.

Basically, copy everything from the CD instead of just KNOPPIX. If you overwrite just the KNOPPIX file it will try to use the older 2.4.26 kernel, and things will break.

Yes.Specifically, the minirt24.gz and the linux24 must also be upgraded. But it doesn't hurt to just copy everything. Posted by adssse on Nov. 27 2005,01:15
Awesome thanks very much. I just upgraded and everything seems to be going pretty good. I appreciate the help, I guess I havent had to upgrade when concerning a new kernel.

Can one of you explain this further? I just re-did my frugal install and moved from 2.0 to 1.5, due to a nagging wireless NIC problem. I just used the desktop grub frugal install option after I booted on the DSL 1.5 CD. Would this have updated everything? I'm not really confident that this worked right, as the firefox and sylpheed icons no longer work.

HiI am not sure of your exact problem but one I have had with icons has to do with backup/restore. By backing up all of your home directory you back up your current settings. When you move to a new release the new icon settings sometimes get overwritten with old (incompatible) icon settings. Here is the .xfiletool.lst contents I use to solve some of those problems. Cache XUL.mfasl deployment/cache .opera/images .opera/cache4 .xtdesktop home/dsl/.fluxbox/menu home/dsl/.xinitrc There may be others I haven't identified yet. good luck Posted by roberts on Nov. 27 2005,16:35
The title "frugal update" is mis-leading. As a "frugall update" was not done only copying the single KNOPPIX file. If the frugal install script was re-run selecting update then the main system files would have been correct. This method to re-run the script should be used because often times other changes are made such as new boot codes that would only be in minirt24.gz. The files that I have posted usually come in from backup/restore. You may choose to always exclude them such as hawki has done. |
