I want to replace a distro with DSL....HelpForum: HD Install Topic: I want to replace a distro with DSL....Help started by: Phinger Posted by Phinger on Nov. 30 2005,22:04
I hav'nt done this before......hence the question. I have a lappy with Slax on it, and want to get rid of it in favor of DSL(was'nt happy with it). Will the DSL disk give me some prompt to format the HDD before install, or should I do this prior to installation? Lilo is already there....any chance of saving it? Also...it has a 2gig Hdd, and 128mb ram. Any input on swap size, and file system (ext3 right now)? Posted by larkl on Dec. 01 2005,13:10
I would boot on the CD, then open a Xterminal and you can run your formatting commands here. Alternatively, you can boot on the CD with DSL 2. This keeps you out of the graphics (X) environment, as all you need is the command prompt. With 128 M of RAM I would consider a frugal install with the TORAM option. You can read about it in the forums. You'll be amazed at the speed. I'm using 150M of swap with 128M of RAM. One rule of thumb is to use twice the amount of RAM, ie- 50M RAM ==> 100M swap). Probably don't need double if you have 128M.

When u install, it asks you about where you wanna install and it will automatically format that partition after you confirm it.Once DSL is installed it will ask you if you wanna install lilo or grub, then you simply say no. |
