Do I need /boot partition?Forum: HD Install Topic: Do I need /boot partition? started by: libretto Posted by libretto on May 06 2004,20:21
Hi there,I'm looking to partition my server HDD. On my other dual boot machine (eg running win98se and mandrake 9.2) I have needed a 50MB /boot partition before the first 1024 bytes/sectors? on the HDD. If were to partition my 20GB drive as below, would I still need this /boot partition at the beginning of the drive? Part1: Win2K (NTFS ~1GB) Part2: Files to be shared (NTFS ~18GB) Part3: DSL HD install (~1GB) Any suggestions welcome. Posted by SaidinUnleashed on May 06 2004,22:58
make the shared partition FAT32.NTFS support on linux is flakey. writing to ntfs = loss of data about 45% of the time. blame M$ for not releasing the specs for ntfs and making people reverse engineer it. peace! Posted by libretto on May 08 2004,23:43
Thanks for the heads up, I was half thinking of that. But still do I need a /boot partition at the beginning of the drive for DSL? Posted by CappyCaffeine on May 09 2004,01:12
no. all you need is a / and swap if your system supports LBA (large block addressing)Cappy Posted by libretto on May 09 2004,15:47
Its for my miniPC (see my topic on the user feedback board), so that should have LBA. But will have to wait till after exams Cheers for the advice |
