I am downloading 0.7 right now and I have a simple question that needs an answer. Can I rip and convert an audio cd to mp3?

If you install GCombust + cdparanoia, you will be able to rip audio CD tracks into *.wav files.

You will need some kind of MP3 encoder to convert these files into *.mp3 format.

I am sure that there are programs out there that will let you do the encoding. Who knows, there may even be a program already on the DSL CD. I don't know the answer from memory and don't have my DSL box available right now.

Using Synaptic, I did see in the list of Debian packages, one that can change
songs off the CD into .wav files. Those could then be saved to the hard drive, and
once that partition is mounted, they could be played with XMMS. I have that on my list of things to do for Rapidweather Remaster of DSL, but have not done it yet. I even thought about putting a few favorites on the remastered cd, and point to them in the menu, for a demo-play. (can XMMS play .wav files?) I suppose one would still have to boot DSL as "knoppix toram" to play them, as is required to play music cd's.

the cdda2wav package would not have a graphical interface, so one would have to use it on the command line to create the .wav files for the cd tracks involved. Although it is the sort of thing that _can_ be put in a remaster, it would need _instructions_ in the getting started guide to work for the average user. Once they got the hang of it, it would be a useful addition.

I suppose that one could have a bunch of favorite songs on the USB flash memory backup device, and restore them when booting DSL.
.wav files are larger than mp3, however, so that would require either a hard drive partition or a larger USB stick to backup the songs.

Also take a look at Audacity. A great digital editing prog, but you need an extra lib
libmp3lame.so to save tracks as mp3.

Using a double ended mini-jack cable you could take the sound card output & feed it into the mic input to record streaming audio to hard disk.......

cdparanoia peforms the same function as cdda2wav

It is automatically installed as part of the GCombust install script. I don't know if it is included in the new Gcombust.dsl extension.

Of course you still need a program like Audacity if you want MP3s

Is bashburn in 0.7? 'Cause it does all of this, better than xcdroast or gcombust plus more.
