xmms - can't play mp3 files

Greetings again...I can play audio CD's but cannot play mp3 files. When the play button is selected, xmms either freezes or just displays 00:00. I'm using DSL 2.0. I can play the same mp3 files on Windows without a problem.

Suggestions?

DSL comes with the xmms mp3 plugin so it should work by default. You may have installed something else that conflicts with it but I'm not sure what it could be. Do you have a hard drive install or a frugal install/live cd? If you have a frugal install or are using the live cd try re-booting without any mydsl apps and see if it works.

I'm running from HDD.

I have been able to duplicate the problem by using the livecd.

Have you tried playing the file with mpg321? Check the permissions on the file? It could be a memory issue, or a corrupt or unreadable file, or an unreadable filesystem.
