I was wondering if I could add mp3 to dsl..the xmms plays them but would like to rip a few cds and add some mp3's to a directory for the xmms-alarm to run..I noticed there is a ripper for gnome but I am useing dsl w/ fluxbox.. not sure what exactly parinoia does, looks like a gui for extracting wav from cd's..any greater understanding would be appreciated..have a good install on the p166 and do not want to mess it up with attemps to install programs I cannot remove.thanks for any

That usually doesn't matter.  Often when an app is made for Gnome, what it really means is that it uses Gtk rather than Qt or some other gui toolkit.

cdparanoia is a commandline ripper, but the mydsl includes the curses-based dekagen frontend.  It does not include lame (mp3).  If you are not comfortable with keyboad driven applications, or want mp3 encoding without the hassle of installing a separate encoder, you should probably choose grip.

Grip.dsl..thanks will try that. it uses cdparinoia but maby more automatic..already downloaded cdparinoia and lame and installed mydsl...I forgot this post..was eager to get the alarm running..works great btw...need help with dekagen...posted in dsl ext...multimedia...thanks..in meantime will try grip...thanks mikshaw for that tidbit..so some gnome programs will work..have seen some possible aptgets that were gnome so skipped..I guess gtk is ok but gtk2 requires additional stuff? I'm a little confused..sorry...whats new...thanks...

That's correct.  Anything built for gtk2 will require extra things added to DSL.  Anything built for gtk1.2 has a chance of working in DSL without additional dependencies. However, every application has its own needs, many of which may not be in DSL.  Just because it's a gtk1.2 app does not automatically mean it will run in DSL without extra support files....gtk is basically just its user interface.

Thanks, will keep in mind.. grip did not work, error out of space in output dir..played and messed up..nasty. better log out.

The default output dir is usually /home/dsl/mp3. If you are running frugal then it's possible all of your ram was used up quickly unless you have alot of ram available. I use grip and it works great.
