When I thought the audio on my mini-itx DSL box wasn't working, I went out and bought a little USB digital audio gadget called an audio Fairy (Ok, the name is a bit strange, but so is Damn Small). I got it on ebay for $.99 plus $4.00 shipping from HongKong. I plugged it into the mini-ITX, powered it up with DSL, and it worked. Later I got the onboard sound working, so the USB thing got thrown into the sock drawer. Then I realized that the sound out of that gadget was a heck-of-a-lot better than the onboard sound, In fact it rivals my M-Audio firewire 410 professional sound box. The little gadget has two channel mic input and two channel output, but the thing is, DSL will recognize each one as a separate bus if you have more than one plugged into your computer. On my CL6000 based mini-ITX I have up to 6 onboard USB inputs. I could have 12 mic inputs and 12 line outputs on that thing with each one routed to a separate instance of Audacity. I think I may need a full gig of RAM. Anyway, total cost for the audio: $29.94, including shipping from Hong Kong.
Please give me credit for being the first one to publish this idea!

This is the one I bought, so I know it works, but there are others (I just noticed the price went up):
