As much as I like NPR I do wish their website allowed you to listen to stories in mp3 format (or OGG would be nice also).  It seems that you have your choice of Real Player (smil file) or Windows Media PLayer (wax file) format.

Is there an easy way to listen to one of these formats using XMMS or MPlayer?

Here's a sample story page: < http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5434687 >

I'm learning english but I do not understand nothing from that I listen. I have not advance due I live inside a community that not speaks english. To exercise my sense of hearing I need read the exact text from that I listen.
Do know you any web site with audio and respective text from english stories?

I have visited the link without problems.
I listen from that web site so:

Download the npr5210.smil file from link "Listen" about "Teens Turn 'Repeller' into Adult-Proof Ringtone" to, for example /home/dsl/myplaylist folder. Then following commands:

cd /home/dsl/myplaylist
mplayer -playlist npr5210.smil

If you are interested in reading/hearing English at the same time I would recommend installing a voice plugin to your browser and then have it 'read' pages to you while you follow aong. I know that Opera has a XHTML/Voice plugin and I would be surprised if FireFox did not have something similar.

Many thanks Desnotes, interesting idea.
I'm using Festival as text to speech synthesizer but I did not think at a plug-in for Firefox.
Other question. Do know anyone how to change the timming between synthesized words?

Thanks for the ideas but I've had no luck so far.

I've tried the mplayer -playlist filename.smil but all I get is error messages about not being able to open the URL.

I'm using a frugal install of DSL 2.3 with the standard mplayer from the myDSL library

Sorry, I did cheat. I used mplayer on another Linux distro to listen the .smil file.
Later, I will try using mplayer from MyDSL on DSL v2.3 ...

Update: Arrrrggggggggg I can't play that .smil file using Mplayer on DSL

There is a uci realplayer that allows you to listen to NPR which might not be exactly what you are looking for but if you want to listen to NPR smil files it does work.
