Hi there. First of all let me say im loving DSL. It has been a great intro to Linux for me.

I have one problem with it however, when I play MPG video with xMMs it looks like just a bunch of white noise. I downloaded the codec pack but that didn't fix it. Is there something I need to manually configure to get codecs working? I'm using a HD install and my graphics card is an old ATI Rage 128 if ti helps.

QAny input greatly appreciated  :)

BTW is there a way to uninstall myDSL extensions? I have xMule in the myDSL menu 4 times  ???

Hi,
for video, I would recomand to use mplayer with codecs (both available in the appropriate repository). There is no way to unload mydsl extensions. You have to reboot your system in order to have naked, e.g. it without the loaded extensions.

Thanks ZoOp, works good.

Now how can I use mydsl extensions like themes on users other than dsl?

Hi,

I don't know if I understand what you want to do, but I try an answer.

If you want to define another user, you can do it via mydsl menu (setup-->AddUsers). I don't work with other users, but I suppose that DSL keep the specific configuration you define for each user you have defined.

.dsl extensions: you load them for one session; when you stop your session (= shutdown or reboot your machine), DSL unload automatically all extensions you have loaded;

load special .dsl extensions at boot: you can define the .dsl extensions which you want to be automatically loaded when DSL starts. You have then to add in your boot line: mydsl=hdax where hdax is the partition/the device where you have your extensions (for me it is hda5; I think you have to place your extension right there in hdax and not in a repository of hdax; but I am not sure since I don't load extensions at boot).

You can probably edit a specific boot line for each user who you have defined in order to have a specific DSL desktop with specific extensions loaded at boot for each of your user (but I am just guessing, I have no experience with added users).

I hope it helps you

edit to my previous post:

in your boot line, you can define mydsl=hdax/repositoryofyourchoice

in order to load dsl extensions. So that you can define a specific mydsl=hdax/userxrepository for each of your added user.

Hi ZoOp,

What I really want is to be able to use themes downloaded as user 'dsl' with users other than 'dsl'. So far I have been able to run all programs i've downloaded as 'dsl' with other users, but themes only the wallpaper (because I know where they are located). I have generally been using dsl user but recently I tried to switch resolutions with xvesa and now the desktop isn't loading right (the right click menu only shows Xterm, Restart and Exit. And the background doesn't appear).

BTW i'm on an hd install - does that still affect mydsl extensions at shutdown?

Hi,

Ok, thanks, I see the problem; so, here is a possible solution:

1. if you have a hd install, then you have a dsl user in /home (typically /home/dsl/); another user (say: paul) means another repo (typically /home/paul/);
2. creat your user paul and then open emelfm as super-user;
3. open two windows in emelfm, at your left side with /home/dsl/.fluxbox/background/ and at your right side with /home/paul/.fluxbox/background;
4. copy the backgroud of dsl to paul; do the same with the themes (in the styles repository in /.fluxbox).
5. reboot to check; at each reboot, you have the same background and themes for the dsl user and for the paul user; I hope that I'm right.

For your problem with x: I had the same one once and I didn't find any solution for it to be solved... I also had this problem with knoppix and kde once, and have browsed the web for a solution; I found something, but nothing to do or to complicate for my slim brain.... So my advice is: re-install DSL (I would choose a frugal install instead of a hd, in order to experiment without trouble) and specify your users one more time.
