Config:
-- secondary master (hdc) - cd/rw & OS boot drive
-- secondary slave (hdd) - dvd rom for media play

No problem with xmms audio cd play in knoppix 5
-- knoppix cd in master (hdc)
-- music cd in slave (hdd)
-- xmms will play slave as /dev/cdrom1 or /dev/hdd

With dsl 2.4 (either cd boot or pendrive boot)
-- xmms works fine with streaming audio
-- won't play audio cd in slave (hdd)

Cloned line in .fluxbox/menu and it fails to play cdrom1

[exec] (Xmms Play CD) {xmms /dev/cdrom}
[exec] (Xmms Play CD1) {xmms /dev/cdrom1}

Also tried to select /dev/cdrom1 & /dev/scd1 in xmms gui

No apparent permission issues

Solved my own problem.

Go to xmms Options-Preferences
Select CD Audio Player...
Config button
Device /dev/cdrom1
Directory /cdrom
Check drive button
-- If OK
OK button
Apply button

Enjoy your music
