Alright, I'm booting DSL 3.1 and it says that it picks up my sound card (Crystal SoundFusion cs46xx), but when I try to play any sound, even system sounds, I don't hear anything. How do I make it work?

Does it try to play sound?

As in, if you try to play an MP3 with xMMs, does it appear to run and play (albeit still silent,) or does it balk and throw up an error that it can't open sound?

If the file appears to be running in the player, but you just can't hear anything, try the dMx in the lower right hand corner of the desktop, turn that volume slider up, and then click on the mixer and turn the other ones up too (Especially PCM Wave for mp3's)

It it balks and throws up an error message when you try to play the mp3, your next best bet is to download the ALSA-Drivers from the MyDSL -()- System button and follow directions in the the ALSA-README in /home/dsl. That's what I ended up doinf for the Compaq.

Go here to get a quick, small free (and awesome!) mp3 file to test with :)
