My laptop is a dell xpi p133st. According to the bios the sound is;

SoundBlasterPro compatible 3.00 voice and music function
audiocontroller es1888
internal isa bus
irq5 (capture irq)
irq9 (playback irq)
dma 0 (capture dma)
dma 2 (playback dma)
i/o address   220-22F (configuration registers)
                    288-28B (fm synthesizer)
                    330-331 (mpu 401)

The only sound related thing seen in lsmod is soundcore. Any thoughts? Afraid this is all like greek to me.

Perhaps this will help

sudo modprobe sb

or may be need to add more specs like this

sudo modprobe sb io=0x230 irq=5 dma=0 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x320 isapnp=0

Allright! The second command was a success. Read a similar command in this forum and should have tried it in hindsight.

The next question is a minor problem, mostly just curious. xmms doesn't stream properly.

Soma fm plays back like something from a bad science fiction movie with a bunch of static mixed in. Is this related to having only 40Mb ram?

No big deal. It's not what I wanted the sound for.

Edit/ Forgot to mention I downloaded a .wav file. This played back just fine.
Err, nm. Other urls can stream. Something about Soma it seems.

Thanks for the help

What kind of stream is it?

Can't tell you as it no longer streams, though it did perfectly on my Mepis box at the time of the post. Connects but doesn't do anything.

Honestly not concerned about it. Just me rambling on.
