I'm curently in the process of doing a DSL hd install and am wondering how I can get DivX movies to play on it after it is done. It is a Sony Vaio PCG-F250. With an Intel Celeron 333MHz CPU and 32MB or RAM. I know it's fast enough to play DivX movies, it used to do it for the very short time I had Windows Me on it. But I'm now trying to find it for DSL. I can't use apt-get because the laptop isn't connected to the internet (and probably won't be unless I call my ISP). So is there a codec pack or something that I can download and burn to a Cd and then move to my laptop? Also I use vlc as my main video player on my windows box. Is it safe to assume that it is also good to use on Linux? [edit] this is my first foray into tux's neck of the woods. install XFree86.dsl and mplayer.dsl (Xfree86 version)

vlc is very good and also available in the synaptic download menu.But I agree with jls. Mplayer is your best player for DSL. There is a nice extension for it available in the myDSL respository. With 32MB of ram, you probably should create a swap partition or a DOS swapfile for additional virtual memory. Mplayer is nice because it works well in situations where the RAM is limited.
