I installed DSL on a Compaq Armada 1572 (Pentium I 233 with 80 Mb ram) several day ago, but I have no sound.
As HP says, my laptop uses ESS 1878 chipset.
How can I have it working? It sounds when booting Win2k.
Thanks in advance.

This is an ISA sound chip, fully sound blaster compatible.  You need to manually load and configure the OSS driver -

modprobe sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 mpu_io=0x330 isapnp=0
modprobe opl3 io=0x388

I have almost the same computer(Compaq armada 1592DT). These sound settings enabled OSS sound support for me too, but I still have trouble playing mp3 with X on. Can you play mp3 with Xserver on?

Yes.
I'm playing mp3 files with xmms on X.
Bye
