Lately i've been using DSL 1.0.1 on my main computer due to a hard drive failure.

I watched the boot information during startup and it looks as if DSL will work with  Firewire, but when I used Synaptic to download < kino > (a video capture and editing program) and tried to get Kino to see my DV cam, it says the IEEE1394 subsystem is not present. I take this to mean that there isn't any software managing the Firewire port, but The bootup says it's being taken care of by Hotplug. Can anyone enlighten me as to what's going on?

IEEE1394 does work with DSL and is usually detected without any problems.

You can type

lsmod

or even

lspci -v

to see information for your drivers and for your hardware

I had trouble with gettting kino to work, so I gave up and tried a different dv capture program.  I forget the name, but try searching Synatpic with a filter for "dv" or "1394" and see if you find any matches.
